La personalità artistica di Vincenzo Maltempo ha trovato un’importante collocazione nell’eterogeneo panorama musicale contemporaneo soprattutto grazie al suo impegnativo lavoro di riscoperta e di diffusione della musica di Charles Valentin Alkan, del quale è oggi considerato come uno dei più autorevoli interpreti e conoscitori al mondo.
Dal 2011, infatti, Maltempo ha intrapreso un’intensa attività discografica registrando i lavori più importanti del compositore francese per l’etichetta Piano Classics; questo notevole lavoro ha attirato l’attenzione delle più rinomate riviste internazionali come Diapason, The Guardian, PianoNews, Gramophone e molte altre. Andrew Clements (The Guardian) lo definisce: “Esaltante, una vera rivelazione!”, e Robert Nemececk (PianoNews) scrive: “considerato uno dei più grandi interpreti contemporanei di questo compositore [Alkan] nessun altro pianista come Maltempo è riuscito a dominare in modo così ben congegnato e orchestrale le enormi difficoltà della sua musica”.
Maltempo ha inciso e suonato le opere più importanti di Alkan ed è uno dei pochissimi interpreti ad aver suonato l’intera raccolta dei suoi mastodontici “Douze études dans toutes les tons mineurs” op. 39 in un unico recital, a Yokohama, nel Novembre 2013. Come risultato della sua continua opera di riscoperta e promozione della musica di Alkan è stato nominato membro onorario della “Alkan Society” di Londra. Nel 2019 comincia la sua collaborazione con la prestigiosa casa editrice tedesca G. Henle Verlag. Nel 2020 viene pubblicata dalla casa editrice Florestano la sua biografia sul compositore, la prima in italiano.
Vincenzo Maltempo è definito un “musicista pieno di risorse con una tecnica ed una intelligenza formidabili” (Jeremy Lee, Top Ear), dai “suoni come scolpiti nel marmo” (PianoNews). Elogiato da molti grandi pianisti contemporanei, Alexander Lonquich scrive di lui come di “un pianista / musicista fuori dal comune […]. E’ uno dei pochi che possono rendere giustizia alla musica Alkan, che sembra non avere segreti per lui. Maltempo tende generalmente ad esplorare i lati estremi di uno stile. Non mi sorprende che il suo ultimo CD dedicato a Schumann abbia colpito nel centro. Raramente, se non mai ho ascoltato una Humoreske così convincente e multiforme allo stesso tempo […] Non stupisce di certo la sua dedizione al lavoro di trascrizione di importanti partiture orchestrali […] E un ultima cosa importante: si ha la sensazione che per lui lo strumento sia sempre un mezzo e non un fine in se stesso”. Il celebre critico musicale Bryce Morrison su Gramophone apprezza la sua dinamica sgargiante e colorata, che accosta a quella di un Horowitz, e Lorenzo Arruga – giornalista e critico musicale italiano – riconosce nel suo “fraseggio libero, nel suo tocco caldo e nel suo atteggiamento di amore per i compositori e la musica” un profondo legame con la ‘scuola pianistica di un tempo’. Nonostante la giovane età, Vincenzo Maltempo può contare nella sua discografia, oltre a cinque CD con opere di Alkan (raccolti nel 2014 in un cofanetto), numerosi altri titoli: a Franz Liszt ha dedicato due CD, “Klavierwerke” (Gramola 2009), e “The complete Hungarian Rhapsodies” (Piano Classics, 2016), doppio cd nominato da Gramophone come “Editor’s choice” e definita “la più bella integrale che abbia mai ascoltato” da Paul Ruckert nella sua recensione al disco sulla stessa rivista; a Robert Schumann (Piano Classics 2014) un disco con importanti lavori pianistici; un doppio CD (Brilliant Classics 2014) con il violinista Carmelo Andriani, alla musica per violino e pianoforte di Michele Esposito (un compositore italo/irlandese poco noto al grande pubblico); mentre alla musica di S. Lyapunov (Piano Classics, Aprile 2017) riserva un’importante incisione dei 12 Studi Trascendentali, che si aggiunge alle pochissime precedenti testimonianze discografiche complete esistenti e che guadagna critiche a 5 stelle su Diapason e su altre riviste italiane ed estere. Nel 2018, e sempre per la Piano Classics, vede la luce un doppio CD con i due Concerti per Pianoforte e Orchestra di J. Brahms, registrati live con la Mitteleuropa Orchestra diretta da Marco Guidarini, mentre nel 2019 per la stessa etichetta viene pubblicato un doppio CD con le 10 Sonate per pianoforte A. Skrjabin: è il primo italiano nella storia ad inciderne l’integrale.
Vincitore del Premio Venezia 2006 al Teatro La Fenice, la sua carriera concertistica internazionale lo vede da quel punto esibirsi nei più importanti festival e teatri d’Europa (Venezia “La Fenice”, Cagliari “Teatro Lirico”, Spoleto “Festival dei due Mondi”, Festival F. Liszt di Raiding, “Raritäten der Klaviermusik” a Husum etc), America (Miami “International Piano Festival”, etc), Messico (“Festival Internacional de Piano en Blanco y Negro”), Asia. Il suo percorso musicale, iniziato spontaneamente in età molto precoce nella sua famiglia, è fortemente influenzato da Salvatore Orlando, pianista e insegnante, allievo di Sergio Fiorentino, con il quale si diploma nel 2005 al Conservatorio S. Cecilia di Roma con il massimo dei voti e la lode. I suoi studi proseguono in seguito con Riccardo Risaliti presso l’Accademia pianistica Internazionale “Incontri col Maestro” di Imola, dove ha la possibilità di frequentare masterclass con pianisti come V. Aschkenazy, O. Marshev, R. Levin, Z. Kocsis e altri.

Dal 2017 è fondatore e direttore artistico del “Premio Alkan per il virtuosismo pianistico”, evento annuale che ha luogo al Castello di Castano, nel piacentino.
Vincenzo Maltempo vive a Torino ed è docente di pianoforte principale al Conservatorio di Alessandria.
The artistic personality of Vincenzo Maltempo has gained an important place in the heterogeneous contemporary music scene thanks to his demanding work of rediscovery of the music of Charles Valentin Alkan, of which he is now considered as one of the most authoritative interpreters and connoisseurs in the world.
Since 2011 Maltempo has recorded the most important works of the French composer for the Piano Classics label; this remarkable work has attracted the attention of the most renowned international magazines such as Diapason, The Guardian, PianoNews, Gramophone and many others. Andrew Clements (The Guardian) defines him: "Exciting, a real revelation!", And Robert Nemececk (PianoNews) writes: "considered one of the greatest contemporary interpreters of this composer [Alkan], no other pianist like Maltempo has managed to dominate in so well thought out and orchestral way the enormous difficulties of his music".
Maltempo has recorded and played Alkan's most important works and is one of the very few performers to have played the entire collection of his colossal "Douze études dans toutes les tons mineurs" op. 39 in a single recital, in Yokohama, in November 2013. As a result of his continuous work of rediscovery and promotion of Alkan's music he has been named an honorary member of the “Alkan Society” of London. In 2019 he began his collaboration with the prestigious G. Henle Verlag. In 2020 he publishes a voluminous biography on Alkan, the first in Italian language (Florestano 2020).
Vincenzo Maltempo is defined as a "resourceful musician with a formidable technique and intelligence" (Jeremy Lee, Top Ear), with "sounds as if carved in marble" (PianoNews). Praised by many great contemporary pianists, Alexander Lonquich writes of him as “an extraordinary pianist / musician […]. He is one of the few who can do justice to Alkan's music, which seems to have no secrets from him. Maltempo generally tends to explore the extreme sides of a style. It doesn't surprise me that his latest Schumann CD hit the center. Rarely, I have heard a Humoreske so convincing and multifaceted at the same time [...] It is certainly not surprising his dedication to the transcription of important orchestral scores [...] And one last important thing: one has the feeling that for him the instrument should always be a means and not an end in itself ".
The famous music critic Bryce Morrison on Gramophone appreciates his bright and colorful dynamics, which he compares to that of a Horowitz, and Lorenzo Arruga - Italian journalist and music critic - recognizes in his "free phrasing, in his warm touch and in his attitude of love for composers and music” a deep bond with the 'piano school of the past'. Despite his young age Vincenzo Maltempo can count in his discography, in addition to five CDs with works by Alkan (collected in 2014 in a box set), numerous other titles: to Franz Liszt he dedicated two CDs, "Klavierwerke" (Gramola 2009), and “The complete Hungarian Rhapsodies” (Piano Classics, 2016), a double CD nominated by Gramophone as “Editor's choice” and defined as “the most beautiful integral I have ever heard” by Paul Ruckert in his review of the album in the same magazine; to Robert Schumann (Piano Classics 2014) a CD with some of his most important piano works; a double CD (Brilliant Classics 2014) with the violinist Carmelo Andriani, with the music for violin and piano by Michele Esposito; while to the music of S. Lyapunov (Piano Classics, April 2017) he devoted an important recording of the 12 Transcendental Studies, which is added to the very few previous complete recording in existence and which earns 5-star reviews on Diapason and on other Italian and foreign magazines. In 2018, and again for Piano Classics, a double CD was released with the two Piano Concertos by J. Brahms, recorded live with the Mitteleuropa Orchestra conducted by Marco Guidarini, while in 2019 for the same label was issued a double CD with the 10 Piano Sonatas by A. Skrjabin: Maltempo is the first Italian in history to record the complete set.
Winner of the 2006 Venice Prize at the La Fenice Theater, his international concert career sees him perform from that point in the most important festivals and theaters in Europe (Venice "La Fenice", Cagliari "Teatro Lirico", Spoleto "Festival dei due Mondi" , Festival F. Liszt di Raiding, “Raritäten der Klaviermusik” in Husum etc), America (Miami “International Piano Festival”, etc), Mexico (“Festival Internacional de Piano en Blanco y Negro”), Asia. His musical career, which began spontaneously at a very early age in his family, is strongly influenced by Salvatore Orlando, pianist and teacher, a pupil of Sergio Fiorentino, with whom he graduated in 2005 at the S. Cecilia Conservatory in Rome with summa cum laude. He continues his studies with Riccardo Risaliti at the International Piano Academy "Incontri col Maestro" in Imola, where he has the opportunity to attend masterclasses with pianists such as V. Aschkenazy, O. Marshev, R. Levin, Z. Kocsis and others.
His piano transcriptions are published by Ries & Erler in Berlin and by MusePress in Tokyo.
Since 2017 he has been the founder and artistic director of the International Piano Competition "Alkan Prize for piano virtuosity".
He currently lives in Turin and he teaches at the Conservatory in Alessandria, Italy.
